The Culture of Thin Bites Fiji

In the article, The Culture of Thin Bites Fiji, Goodman makes the argument that the entertainment industry in western society pushes women to look like a certain ideal, which leads to major self- esteem issues. She claims that in our society women are expected to be thin and pretty and if they are overweight they are repulsive and ugly. This is evident when televisions became available in Fiji. The number of girls with eating disorders and body image issues rose significantly. It is interesting how much of an influence media can have on a society. Like how women were praised for being fat until they saw American television. I think that in our society women and girls are pressured into looking a certain way and many try to fit the ideal. While our country may be obese as a whole, there are many girls with eating disorders because they are trying to look like models and celebrities. I also think that it's kind of stupid because while celebrities and models are really thin, the pictures we see in magazines and stuff are all airbrushed.
